Industrial Design and The Pursuit of Beauty

September 17, 2018

However simple a product may be, designers should use their ingenuity to furnish the product with style.

Industrial design is not just making something pretty and useful. Designers’ goals are to create products being able to deliver feelings, to arouse emotions and to strike a chord with users. The product must convey a certain idea to show its character. For instance, minimalism, simplicity and the concept of “less is more” promote the impression of plain and natural. Designs of these style will generate a sense of tranquility and purity, but not dull or tedious.

Goals are simple and clear, but the ways to achieve is complex and difficult. There are all kinds of methods to demonstrate the same concept, but only few will succeed. The key to a successful design is detail and aesthetic. The aesthetic mentioned here is not just to make the product pleasant to the eye. Texture, curve, angle, volume, transparency, color and etc. are the details that work the magic. These details are determined by the result of observation and scientific research.

Designers will take color psychology, praxeology and statistical analysis into consideration to predict consumers’ preference and behavior. Take MUJI’s automatic pencil for example. The white, transparent and matte surface presents the gentleness and modesty of the pencil while the slightly rough texture gives a warm tactile feeling. Even though the subject is an undemanding automatic pencil, designers still spare no efforts to make the ordinary stationery attractive.
