Manufacturing Methods and Industrial Design

July 2, 2018

Manufacturing method is an important factor, if not the most, for industrial design. Industrial design without manufacturing methods is a house without foundations. No matter how fascinating the idea and design is, once the idea cannot be put into practice, it is futile and pointless. To transform an idea to a real, concrete product, “How to make?” is the key question that designers should always keep in mind.

Industrial design integrates skills and knowledge which cover various fields. Since every manufacturing method requires professional knowledge and experience to master, it is unlikely that designers know everything and know it all. What designers know are what choices do they have and how to manage these decisions to make it work. In other words, industrial designers have to search for information expansively, storing them in databases and withdraw them when needed.

Knowing which materials, structures and methods are most suitable for the project, ODIIST can tackle problems flexibly and creatively. The same need of a product can be fulfilled by different design and different manufacturing method. Facing restrictions of time, cost, requirements and technology, with discreet, we make the best use of every resource under the most limited circumstances. Unlike makers or craftsmen who focus on manual or small-volume production, industrial designers emphasize on efficiency, reducing process and cost. Additionally, designers plan not only for the present but for the future as well. The mechanism or structure of a component can be applied to other different products to satisfy different purpose and needs.
